The final morning of the 10th Annual Mines and Money Asia conference focused on 4 themes: Battery and Energy Metals, Technology, Gold & Precious Metals, and the Future for Mining and Energy.
The battery and energy metals sessions kicked off with a discussion on uranium. “We are a believer in the long-term uptrend for uranium”, said Warren Gilman, CEO and Chairman, CEF Holdings. Gilman and his fellow panelists were broadly optimistic on the potential for uranium, especially after its poor price performance in 2016.

“Renewables are getting more cost effective, and fast” whilst “investment in renewable up to 2040 will be $7.3 trillion” according to Alastaire Dick, the Operations Lead at The Carbon War Room who kicked off day 2 of Future Energy and Finance.
With a focus of driving change in an industry that, according to many, need a shift in mindset, Alastaire stated that “mines need to think differently” and emphasised that this is the future and technically this is possible today.

The clear standout for Day 2 of Mines and Money Asia, was Dr. Mobius is the founder of emerging markets investing. 80 years old and still going strong.
Dr. Mobius explained to a packed auditorium how there were only 6 emerging countries to invest in, back in 1987. Today there are 70, and part of this is due to Dr. Mobius’ vision, going where other investors have feared to tread.

“The mining industry is well on the road to recovery” announced Andrew Thake, Head of Content at Mines and Money, as the 10th annual Mines and Money Asia event kicked off in Hong Kong this morning.
With the number of registered miners in attendance up by 15% this year, and 60% of the audience qualified investors and financiers, the mood in the audience was optimistic.
As the chair for the day, Lawrence Roulston, Managing Director, West Bay Capital Advisors, professed “When you are at the bottom of the mining cycle it looks dark and dreary, but when the markets are turning, there is no better place to be in then the mining industry”.

Understanding how the fast-approaching clean energy future will look was the key theme for the first day of the inaugural Future Energy and Finance conference, which kicked off in Hong Kong this morning.
Willem Middelkoop, Founder and CIO, Commodity Discovery Fund, and Author, The Tesla Revolution opened the day, speaking about the electric vehicle revolution and where the money is heading right now stating that “90 percent of the renewable investments we have seen have been wind, solar and energy storage”.
